30 x 40, Oil on Mat Board

Jeremy Brett was one of the most brilliant portrayers of Sherlock Holmes ever to grace the screen. His first Watson, David Burke, was no slouch, either. Take that, Nigel Bruce.

So simple yet elegant and sophisticated in it's detail. Brett and Burke were a wonderful Holmes/Watson. A joy to watch.

AMAZING, AWESOME, INCREDIBLE & FANTASTIC!!! LOVE THIS A LOT!!!

My favourite portrayers of Holmes and Watson! :D *I did like Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law in the roles but Brett & Burke are my all-time favourites and the two I automatically think of whenever Holmes and Watson are mentioned.*

This piece is amazing! I love the colour scheme and texture, which works to wonderful effect! :) Beautifully and elegantly done!

GREAT WORK AND WELL DONE!!! :)

*faves*

*Some of the old Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Holmes movies were entertaining, and some of the old time radio programs as well, but it always irritated me how Watson was portrayed as being an idiot-although he got his own back a time or two-since he most certainly was not! After having read your response to Not-A-Tree-225, it makes much more sense about why they were portrayed the way they were at that time. :) *

Thanks very much, and thanks for the fave.

Like all films, Holmes movies are inevitably a product of their circumstances and environment, and subject to the whims and concerns of their producers. Even Brett's Granada series, great as it was, starts breaking down a bit toward the end, veering into wild extrapolations on the Canon (like The Last Vampire).

When I was young, and the Rathbone films were all the Holmes films I had access to (and that only occasionally, at the whim of television programming executives, since we didn't have DVDs or even VHS in those days), I absolutely HATED Nigel Bruce. Today, now that I understand enough about the films' background to take the social and historical context into consideration, I find him much less painful to watch. Of course, that's probably also influenced by the fact that I do have DVDs now, and so I've always got Burke, Hardwicke, Duvall, Morrell, and other better Watsons to fall back on if Bruce's buffoonery becomes too much.
